This week, I entreat you to reject the word ‘should.’

I remember in my high school, there was a giant orange poster that had a quote from Yoda on it that read: “There is no try, there is only do or do not.” I want to take that message and apply it to ‘should,’ in any of it’s forms.

We talk a lot about what we ‘should have done’ in the past, or what we ‘should’ do in the future. Some of these things are perfectly legitimate plans, of course – like ‘I should take my keys with me so I won’t be locked out of the house later.’ But so many of them are just conditional phrases that don’t have any reasoning backing them up.

‘I should call/email that person back.’

‘I should exercise during my break time.’

‘I should be more efficient.’

Will the world implode if these things are not accomplished? Will it matter if you make a little mistake or are a little slower on something than you could have been? Most of the time, the answer is ‘no.’

Keep on keepin’ on this week, folks!
